Beaufort, SC Regatta
06/29/24

To kick off our summer season, THE WARRIORS traveled to Beaufort, SC to compete in an exciting and interesting town sponsored regatta.
31 teams participated in races divided into competitive categories THE WARRIORS raced in the Seniors Mixed Boat division
The races were all 200M sprints
Held on a river inlet to the Atlantic ocean meant we faced a challenging current and the constant tide shifts.
In the final race we paddled against an 8MPH current
AND - WE WON THE GOLD
Of the 31 teams entered, only three times were posted that were faster than THE WARRIORS and those teams were (much) younger paddlers.
THE WARRIORS sent 17 paddlers and our terrific drummer, CHRISSIE, to the event. We competed short handed in the 1st. & 2nd. heats, and added alternates along the way.

MOVIE NIGHT
We prepared for our "ROAD TRIP" with a
"Traveling Team Movie Night"
COACH invited his team over to watch the latest "paddling movie", "THE BOYS IN THE BOAT"
It was a rousing and memorable evening. The highlight was Lou Mintzer's fascinating talk about his personal experiences as a varsity rower in the "HEAVY 8" SKULL, at the University of St. Joseph, in Philadelphia, PA in his college years.
His stories about training, racing and winning in a "HEAVY 8" were quite stirring. He tried and succeeded in bridging the gap between the two "on the water" sports or Crew & Dragon Boating.
Our sincere thanks to you Lou.

To Say GoodBye

Sadly, we have lost of our own. . .
During the 5 weeks of training leading up to the Beaufort Regatta, quite suddenly, we lost one of the most precious friends one can ever have.
Dick Kanyan was more than just a teammate. He was truly a constant beacon of love, inspiration and quiet leadership.
He set THE EXAMPLE of HOW TO HELP OTHERS, PUT THOSE IN NEED FIRST & ALWAYS LISTEN, LEARN & LOVE.
WE WILL MISS HIM
But we are sure he was in the boat when we raced at Beaufort, calling out his favorite command. . . "LEGS - LEGS", in his deep and inspiring voice He was our amplifier.
Dick, we love you and will never forget your smiling face.
